Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday as investors locked in profits following the market's recent run of closing highs, with some investors opting to hit the sidelines ahead of the conclusion of a two-day central bank meeting later in the day.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 64.61 points, or 0.33 percent, from Wednesday to 19,224.82.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 4.05 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,533.36.
Insurance, rubber product, and oil and coal product-linked stocks comprised those that declined the most in early trade.
