Tokyo stocks opened lower on Monday as a weak showing on Wall Street at the end of last week dented investor sentiment amid a lack of fresh domestic cues.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 179.09 points, or 0.80 percent, from Friday to 22,071.16.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, declined 12.38 points, or 0.74 percent, at 1,660.60
Nonferrous metal, pulp and paper, and electric appliance-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
