Tokyo stocks open sharply higher

TOKYO, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Tuesday, following U.S. shares advancing overnight on hopes for progress in key international trade talks.

In the opening minutes after the morning bell, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 347.81 points, or 1.52 percent, from Friday to 23,198.58.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 20.98 points, or 1.26 percent, at 1,687.48.

Oil and coal product, insurance and mining-oriented issues comprised those that advanced the most early on.

Markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
