TOKYO, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Wednesday as reports that Iran launched multiple missiles against an airbase in Iraq hosting U.S. forces triggered a risk-off mood.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 514.75 points, or 2.18 percent, from Tuesday to 23,060.97.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 32.93 points, or 1.91 percent, at 1,692.12.

Marine transportation, precision instrument, and real estate-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
