At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 72.20 U.S. cents, up from 71.65 U.S. cents on Friday.
"Sentiment rose ahead of the U.S. long weekend, helped by President (Donald) Trump's backflip to now support a large-scale fiscal support package. The U.S. dollar fell, and bond yields rose slightly," Westpac Bank economists said in a morning note.
At 09:30 (AEST), the local unit was buying 72.29 U.S. cents.
