Tokyo stocks open marginally lower on fading hopes for U.S. stimulus

TOKYO, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened marginally lower on Tuesday, tracking declines on Wall Street overnight as hopes faded for a coronavirus-related stimulus package to be agreed upon before the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 3

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 40.33 points, or 0.17 percent, from Monday to 23,630.80.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 3.73 points, or 0.23 percent, at 1,634.25.

Mining, land transportation, and pulp and paper-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
