Aussie dollar nudges fresh multi-year high

SYDNEY, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Australian dollar lifted against the greenback on Thursday, reaching a fresh 2.5 year high of 75.79 U.S. cents before levelling off.

At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 75.66 U.S. cents, up from 75.60 U.S. cents on Wednesday.

"U.S. Nov retail sales disappointed while the Federal Open Market Committee held steady, keeping its options open," Westpac Bank economists said in a morning note.

"The U.S. dollar was choppy in response, AUD/USD returning to 75.70 U.S. cents."

At 09:30 (AEST), the local unit was buying 75.73 U.S. cents.
