SEOUL, June 21 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export rose 5.3 percent from a year earlier to 32.89 billion U.S. dollars for the first 20 days of June, customs office data showed Wednesday.

It marked the first turnaround for the 20-day period in 10 months on the back of the higher business days compared to the same period of last year.

The daily average export retreated 2.0 percent during the June 1-20 period.

Import sank 11.2 percent to 34.5 billion dollars in the 20-day period, sending the trade deficit to 1.61 billion dollars, according to Korea Customs Service.

Semiconductor export plunged 23.5 percent in the cited period, keeping a downward trend since August last year.

Outbound shipment for oil products and computers declined in double digits, but automotive shipment more than doubled amid growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles.

Import for crude oil, natural gas and coal went down in the 20-day period, but those for semiconductor equipment and automobiles advanced in double figures.

The country's trade balance has stayed in red since March last year amid the weaker demand for locally-made products.
