China Guodian Corp., one of China's five power giants, lately suggested Chinese government pay attention to the survival of thermal power companies in provinces with big hydropower output and study related compensation policies for them amid the ongoing power system reform.

China's power system reform is entering a new phase with comprehensive pilot projects in all aspects. The new round of power system reform will step up building a power market system and forming a market-oriented electricity pricing mechanism.

Chinese government recently released a string of core documents for the power system reform, covering all aspects from pricing reform to market establishment.

Guodian believed that the establishment of prioritized power generation and consumption mechanism would guarantee orderly processing of the marketed-oriented reform in power system, and direct power trading would be an effective way to establish a competitive power market.
