Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's win in the lower house election on Sunday settled market jitters over political stability and the future course of economic policy.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 199.76 points, or 0.93 percent, from Friday to 21,657.40.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 12.51 points, or 0.72 percent, at 1,743.15.

Metal product, mining, and pulp and paper-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
