TOKYO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Wednesday following a solid lead from Wall Street overnight after some robust corporate earnings reports encouraged buying.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 372.32 points, or 1.68 percent, from Tuesday to 22,579.53.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 23.33 points, or 1.44 percent, at 1,643.53.

The majority of industry categories advanced into positive territory, with rubber product, machinery and marine transportation-linked issues comprising notable gainers in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
