TOKYO, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened mixed Friday, on buying on the back of Wall Street's overnight rise and selling on the yen's strength against the U.S. dollar after subpar U.S. manufacturers' sentiment data for December.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 8.63 points, or 0.04 percent, from Thursday to 23,873.48.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.72 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,734.39.

Pulp and paper, and mining issues led notable gainers, while transportation equipment and electric appliance issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
