Tokyo stocks open higher tracking U.S. shares' advance

TOKYO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday following Wall Street's advance late last week on improved optimism over the future course of the global economy.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 51.78 points, or 0.22 percent, from Friday to 23,868.41.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 1.10 points, or 0.06 percent, at 1,734.17.

Pharmaceutical, service and retail-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
