The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 9.47 points, or 0.04 percent, from Monday to close the day at 23,830.58.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.20 points, or 0.07 percent, to finish at 1,728.22.
Farm and fishery, and glass and ceramic product issues led notable gainers, while insurance and marine transportation-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
