TOKYO, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks were flat Tuesday morning as buying on Wall Street's overnight rise was offset by investors taking profits.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 12.56 points, or 0.05 percent, from Monday to 23,808.55.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged down 1.74 point, or 0.10 percent, at 1,727.68.

Farm and fishery, and machinery issues comprised notable gainers, while insurance and consumer credit issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
