TOKYO, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened mixed on Thursday as Wall Street's overnight prompted buying, while a firm yen against the U.S. dollar weighed on exporters and encouraged selling.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 55.46 points, or 0.25 percent, from Wednesday to 22,494.11.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 2.83 points, or 0.18 percent, at 1,554.40.

Information and communication, and securities brokerage issues led notable gainers, while iron and steel, and real estate issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
