Tokyo stocks open higher on hopes for anti-viral drug

TOKYO, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday, following Wall Street's lead late last week helped by reports an anti-viral COVID-19 treatment has shown some positive results amid rising global coronavirus cases.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 289.08 points, or 1.30 percent, from Friday to 22,579.89.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 22.37 points, or 1.46 percent, at 1,557.57.

Iron and steel, mining and nonferrous metal issues comprised those that advanced the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
