Tokyo stocks close lower amid overheating, virus concerns

TOKYO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as investors took profits amid concerns the market may be overheating, while a firm yen and fears over the continued spread of the coronavirus in Japan and elsewhere also weighed.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 175.14 points, or 0.76 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 22,770.36.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 10.45 points, or 0.66 percent, to finish at 1,579.06.

Pharmaceutical, electric power and gas, and information and communication issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
