TOKYO, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar gave issues widely exposed to overseas markets, like exporters, a boost.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 51.75 points, or 0.23 percent, from Thursday to 22,822.11.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 0.53 point, or 0.03 percent, at 1,579.59.

Securities house, electric power and gas, and information and communication issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
