Tokyo stocks open higher on restored hopes for U.S. stimulus

TOKYO, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday after the market inherited a solid lead from Wall Street overnight on fresh hopes for U.S. stimulus measures to underpin the virus-hit economy.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 62.90 points, or 0.27 percent, from Wednesday to 23,485.72.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 1.10 points, or 0.07 percent, at 1,647.57.

Marine transportation, iron and steel, and pulp and paper issues comprised those that advanced the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
