TOKYO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher on Friday following a solid lead from Wall Street overnight, which was buoyed by claims for unemployment benefits dropping amid broader hopes for economic growth.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 450.29 points, or 1.57 percent, from Thursday to 29,180.17.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 25.97 points, or 1.33 percent, at 1,981.52.

Rubber product, air transportation and transportation equipment issues comprised those that advanced the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
