Tokyo shares closed higher Friday, with the Nikkei index briefly hitting its highest level this year on the depreciating yen against the U.S. dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 47.81 points, or 0.26 percent, from Thursday at 18,381.22, a roughly 10.5-month high.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 4.57 points, or 0.31 percent, higher at 1,464.53.

The day's turnover was around 2,722.5 billion yen (24.01 billion U.S. dollars).
