TOKYO, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed moderately lower on Wednesday as investors opted to take profits as major trading cues were scarce, with a number of major bourses overseas closed for the Christmas holidays.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 47.71 points, or 0.20 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 23,782.87.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 6.80 points, or 0.39 percent, to finish at 1,721.42.

Iron and steel, pulp and paper, and farm and fishery-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
